Historical

The house at 418 N. Mound Street was built by architect Diedrich Rulfs for Dr. John Garrison. Construction is believed to have begun in 1899 and the house was occupied by the Garrison Family in the spring of 1900.

The structure is a large two-story Victorian home approximately 7,600 sq feet, and originally had a wrap-around porch with second story balcony and three story tower on the southwest corner. A new porch and balcony have recently been added to front of the house. Original to the front facade are large windows with six panes on the bottom sash and stationary stained glass top sashes. The front door and three of the four side doors are original and contain engraved scrolling, beveled glass, and stained glass.

The house is listed as a contributing structure in the Washington Square Historical District. The residence has been used as a boarding house, apartments, and a bed and breakfast from about 1910 until present. Oral and census records show that Stephen F. Austin State University teachers lived in the house during the initial year of the college's existence (1923-1924) when the college was across the street on Washington Square; some teachers continued to live there after the college moved to its present campus in 1924. The house has been in nearly continuous use as a bed and breakfast for about the last 30 years. The house was unoccupied for most of 2013-14 and was purchased by its current owner in December of 2014. It has undergone extensive restoration beginning in March 2015.

Mockingbird Suites was recently selected as the recipient of the 2016 Historic Preservation Award by the Nacogdoches Historic Landmark Preservation Committee.
